Whether you’re reading this oh-so-awesome blog post on your computer, tablet or cell phone, you’re staring at some sort of digital screen (like you probably do for most hours of the day!). But as you scan across the words, you probably don’t realize you’re putting major stress on your eyes. After two or more hours in front of a digital screen, you might notice your eyes become red, dry, fatigued or irritated; your vision may get blurry; and you may experience a headache, as well as pain in your neck, shoulders and back. Those are the symptoms of what our pals at The Vision Council call “digital eye strain.”
Lucky for you, there are ways to help relieve the harmful effects of digital eye strain. Be sure to follow the 20/20/20 rule—every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Also, sit at about arms-distance away from your screen. More importantly, consider investing in glasses with specialized lenses. Just pay a visit to your eyecare professional and mention you’re interested in the following lens treatments: an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare, as well as a blue light or high-energy visible light filter. And, of course, be sure to let them know if you require a prescription or a power boost.
The great news is you can get these lenses put into almost any pair of fashion-forward frames you’d like—so whoever said you have to sacrifice style for protection was clearly mistaken! In fact, when us Eyecessorize gals traveled to Las Vegas for the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last week—to help The Vision Council educate attendees about digital eye strain and how to prevent it—we of course let everyone know they can look chic while shielding their eyes from screens. That’s a win-win in our book!
